Tiya

Spicy

Tiya, a modern Indian restaurant in San Francisco, reimagines Indian cuisine with contemporary flair while remaining rooted in its rich culinary traditions. This restaurant offers a refined dining experience that introduces diners to both the beloved flavors of India and unexpected, innovative interpretations.

Joe Says:

Tiya, lived up to its name as it translates to "a gift from god". It hits the mark with innovative and creative dishes and a cocktail program that leaves you asking yourself - what the fuck did I just drink. For a restaurant only in its second month, this place shines and delivers better than imagined.
Excited to revisit once the dust settles and the training wheels come off.

Steve Says:

The food was exceptional. Trying Indian cuisine prepared by a skilled award winning chef offered a completely novel experience for me. Every dish was expertly made and bursting with flavor. The highlight of the evening was the expert mixologist. He has won numerous awards throughout India and graciously shared insights into the effort required to create such exquisite international cocktails.

Ambiance and Setting

The restaurant’s interior is sleek and stylish, blending elements of modern design with subtle Indian motifs. Bold, colorful murals and intricate metalwork are juxtaposed with minimalist furniture, creating an atmosphere that feels simultaneously upscale and approachable. The lighting is soft and warm, making it ideal for intimate dinners or special occasions, while still maintaining a welcoming vibe for casual diners.

The Menu

Tiya’s menu is a thoughtfully curated collection of dishes that span India’s diverse culinary landscape, but with a modern, creative twist. Expect familiar spices and flavors, but presented in ways that feel fresh and contemporary. The dishes are designed for sharing, encouraging a communal dining experience, much like in traditional Indian meals.

Starters

Begin with the "Chili Paneer," where cubes of Indian cheese are stir-fried with bell peppers, onions, and a spicy-sweet chili sauce. The flavors are bold and exciting, with just the right amount of heat. The "Methi Crab Cakes" are another standout—delicate crab meat infused with fenugreek leaves, served with a tangy tamarind chutney. This dish is a great example of how Tiya infuses traditional Indian flavors into Western-style preparations.

Mains

One of the highlights of the main course is the "Lamb Shank Rogan Josh," a classic Kashmiri dish that has been elevated with slow-cooked, fall-off-the-bone lamb shank in a rich, aromatic gravy. The spices are deep and complex, yet balanced, making it a standout.
For a vegetarian option, the "Baingan Bharta Tart" is an intriguing play on the traditional mashed eggplant dish, served in a crispy tart shell with smoked yogurt. The smoky, spiced eggplant is perfectly offset by the creaminess of the yogurt and the crunch of the shell, showcasing the kitchen’s creativity and skill.

Sides and Bread

Accompanying your mains, the "Truffle Naan" is a luxurious twist on the classic Indian bread, infused with truffle oil that adds an earthy richness. The "Jeera Rice" is a fragrant and subtly spiced basmati rice dish, flavored with cumin seeds and served as the perfect foil to the bold mains.

Desserts

For dessert, the "Gulab Jamun Cheesecake" is a modern masterpiece. It combines the traditional syrup-soaked Indian dumplings with a creamy, decadent cheesecake, offering a surprising yet harmonious fusion. Another excellent option is the "Saffron Panna Cotta," delicately flavored with saffron and cardamom, served with rose petals for an aromatic finish.

Beverage Program

Tiya’s beverage program is just as inventive as its food menu, featuring a range of cocktails inspired by Indian spices and ingredients. The "Masala Old Fashioned" blends bourbon with garam masala bitters, giving a subtle warmth and spice to a classic cocktail. The "Mango Lassi Martini" offers a more playful take on the traditional yogurt-based drink, with a hint of vodka and fresh mango puree for a refreshing start to the meal.

Service

The service at Tiya is attentive and polished, with staff well-versed in the menu’s intricacies and eager to share recommendations. The pacing of the meal feels thoughtful, allowing diners to savor each dish without feeling rushed, and the staff's warmth enhances the overall dining experience.

Overall Experience

Tiya presents a sophisticated and modern take on Indian cuisine, where traditional flavors are respected but given a contemporary edge. The restaurant is ideal for adventurous diners looking for familiar tastes reimagined in exciting ways. It successfully straddles the line between authenticity and innovation, making it one of the standout modern Indian restaurants in San Francisco. Whether you’re a long-time lover of Indian food or someone looking to explore it from a new perspective, Tiya delivers a memorable culinary journey.
